If you quit the game at any point the player character commits suicide and you have to start over. If left unattended from leaving the game on, progress will regress as the player mental state declines from chronic loneliness.

Just start by plopping down as many roads as you can. No need to worry about water pipes, power stations, or any other infrastructure: that can all be added later!
