They won't. Why do that when that costs money? They just want to control how you consume games by making sure you're reliant on their services for your gaming needs. This isn't about consumer trends; it's about control. That's it. That's all there is to it. Fuck them.
True, but I do wonder how sustainable that is if something bad like the 2011 PSN hack happens again. Unsure

As a side note, I just realized that there's a chance we don't really see physical collectors editions for games in a few years from now. Eh

The funny thing is that it happened. Like two weeks ago PSN went down and people weren't able to play their games and it just gave so much traction to the "protests" of this digital-only future. Of course PlayStation isn't going to care, they made up their minds and they're going to do what they want to do regardless of who it upsets. It also doesn't help that they knew that tens of millions of people are going to buy GTAVI like the drones they are and it's going to massively boost PS5 sales numbers despite anything else.

I have been on a quest lately to look up any PS3 games I want to buy while prices are still decent. I'm assuming that once the store closes on PS3, that prices of physical PS3 games will probably inflate extremely badly, so might as well pick some of them up now while they're still $20-$30. Trying to stick to sealed copies of them, but unfortunately it looks like I may have to resort to buying used (gross) for some of them, since there's a $100-$200 between some games sealed compared to used.

I vaguely recall seeing something about Xbox having an issue at some point, but don't think I saw anything about PSN having issues. Hmm

I still wouldn't be surprised that Sony and Rockstar had some degree of communication about the formers plan on stopping physical game production. GTA VI is easily the biggest game release of the decade so making that the first AAA game to be digital only will introduce an eye watering number of people to the idea of console games being digital only in the future.

Now I'm wondering how many PS3's will suddenly appear in online listings with the hard drive filled with games that were only available digitally on the PS Store. It's happened before with things like Flappy Bird on phones and P.T. on PS4's, but those were cases of selling a device with a singular unobtainable game on it. I think this would be the first time something can have up to dozens of unobtainable games on it so I can't even imagine what types of crazy prices people will try to attach to it when the time comes.
