Examples of "A Year is a Long Time" in Gaming? - Moonface - Sep 28th, 2026

Inspired by a thread I saw talking about this (a.k.a. how quickly things can move/change) in relation to wrestling, and was curious if it could be applied to the gaming industry or not.

A good example that can probably be used to find a lot of others is E3:
  • March 2022: The ESA announces E3 2022 is cancelled.
  • June 2022: The ESA planned for E3 2023 to be an in-person event.
  • July 2022: The ESA announced a partnership with ReedPop for E3 2023.
  • February 2023: Nintendo confirms they will not be attending E3 2023.
  • March 2023: Microsoft and Ubisoft announce they will not be attending E3 2023. The ESA subsequently announces E3 2023 is cancelled, and ReedPop is no longer a partner.

A lot of stuff in the 90s involving Nintendo in some form also has a lot of moments that take place in the span of a year, but this one I found tickled me:
  • 1994: Nintendo proclaims it to be "The Year of the Cartridge"
  • 1995: PlayStation is the best-selling console of the year, and doesn't use cartridges.
