An exclusive report from IGN has revealed sudden and notable changes to the leadership at Xbox that will see current Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer retiring, Xbox President Sarah Bond resigning, Matt Booty promoted to Chief Content Officer, and current President of Microsoft's CoreAI product Asha Sharma taking over as the new CEO of Microsoft Gaming. The changes will come into effect as soon as Monday, February 23, which will be when Spencer's retirement becomes effective and see Asha Sharma take over his role:

No statement was given from Sarah Bond, who may have resigned after not being Spencer's successor, despite many both inside and outside of Microsoft long believing she would be.
Honestly I'm actually glad to see Phil Spencer retiring. He seems like a nice guy but for a long while now I feel like he's just really been coasting and doing nothing to strengthen the Xbox brand, particularly after that massive acquisition of Activision Blizzard which did absolutely nothing except paint a huge target on Xbox's back that attracted a ton of attention from Microsoft. Spending that much money and as far as I know not making it back yet is just asking to have your parent company watch you like a hawk when before you were a side project to them they didn't need to be overly concerned about and were content to let it do what it was doing prior to that acquisition.
I can't say I trust Sharma's statement in regards to AI, but ultimately all I'm hoping for is that Xbox as a brand (especially as a console brand) continues in the wake of this change because otherwise Sony is just going to end up in a position where there is absolutely zero competition for them in the console market. I know in terms of sales Xbox isn't touching PlayStation at the moment, but I remember how cocky and arrogant Sony were with the PS3 and the only thing that allowed them to be humbled was Xbox, and ironically the roles immediately switched at the start of the following console generation when Xbox was humbled back in turn with the Xbox One announcement. Without Xbox there is no way the PS4 would have turned out the way it did, and if Xbox were in a stronger position for this console generation it might have made Sony give the PS5 reasons to actually be worth a damn.

There's no way Xbox ever recovers in the console market. They just need to go the SEGA route and go full third-party publisher if they want to stay in the gaming market. The PS4 outsold the XBone by a huge margin of 117.2 million PS4s compared to the estimated 51-58 million Xbones. Which sure, you could have said that maybe it was an outlier, since the PS3 only outsold the 360 by a few million by the end, but then you look at PS5 vs XSX and it's the same thing -- PS5 is outselling by double. Estimates have the PS5 at around 80 million worldwide sales, with the XSX trailing them by around 40 million units.
It's clear as day that Xbox is not going to recover. If the PS5 vs XSX was closer to the PS3 vs 360 and not just a complete repeat of the PS4's absolute slaughter of the Xbone, then there might be hope. At this rate, PS6 will likely triple or quadruple the sales of the next Xbox console.
Nah, time to just give it up and go the SEGA route. Xbox as a brand is absolutely cooked. Xbox doesn't even have their previous dominance in the United States, which is the only thing they ever had going for them, with the PS5 currently having an estimated 70% of the market share in the Unites States now. You're done, son.
I imagine the future outlook of the console scene is that PlayStation for the "high-end" console and then Nintendo for the "silly fun" console, with Xbox opting to try and put Game Pass on each system and just become a third-party publisher (or they just poof from the gaming market altogether, but I see them at least trying to push Game Pass shit onto Nintendo and PlayStation as a last ditch effort before they'd give it up entirely).
The fact that not only are they releasing all the previously Xbox-exclusive Bethesda games on PS5 (including Starfield in April if rumors are to be believed), but that they are also releasing, ON LAUNCH, the Halo Remake on PS5 is really telling about how much faith they have in their own games on their own system. Your biggest exclusive franchise and you gotta put the remake of the first game on your competitor. That's gotta hurt. That is the moment every gamer in the world knew that Xbox was done.

Yeah, I agree that the actions Xbox has been taking doesn't bode well for their continuation in the console hardware market. Again though I hope it doesn't see only Sony and Nintendo left because history has shown what can happen when one company feels untouchable.
Whether Xbox stays in console hardware or not though, one thing I think the new leadership does need to do is be more on top of their developers. I feel that a lot of Xbox games have been affected negatively from higher ups being too hands-off with developers, Halo being a striking example of it.

Yeah, I agree that the actions Xbox has been taking doesn't bode well for their continuation in the console hardware market. Again though I hope it doesn't see only Sony and Nintendo left because history has shown what can happen when one company feels untouchable.

XBOX Wire - Resetting XBOX
As had been expected, XBOX has laid off a significant amount of its employees and more, as shared via a new post on XBOX Wire: - 1,600 XBOX employees will be laid off as of today, with plans to eliminate another 20% of XBOX jobs by the end of the financial year 2027 for a total of 3,200 job losses.
- Four studios are no longer with XBOX:
- Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions will become independent studios and retain their IP and catalog.
- Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have entered terms to join new ownership with funding to complete and grow Senua and State of Decay 3 respectively.
- Arkane's management is beginning required consultation with its Works Council to review potential strategic options. The result will either be a sellout or closure.
- Mojang and King will now report directly to Asha Sharma, due to bringing in the largest numbers of monthly active players.
- A main reason for these changes is that due to the aggressive expansion of its studio portfolio since 2018, XBOX has been losing 64 cents for every dollar invested in a typical year.
- Management will be reduced to no more than 5 layers, and if possible, 3 layers. Until now, there have been instances of work passing through up to 14 layers of management. That complexity has slowed decisions, blurred accountability, and made it harder to deliver for players.
- For the first time, XBOX is establishing a Chief Operating Officer with end-to-end P&L responsibility across content, hardware, platform, and services. Helen Chiang has been promoted to this role and will report directly to Asha Sharma. This is in response to teams, studios, and functions all operating independently from each other leading to a lack of shared vision and communication, worsened further by the aforementioned excessive management layers.

I'm glad the studios that weren't kept didn't just get closed down and that they also get to continue working on their announced games. The independence stuff in the last point doesn't surprise me because XBOX has been way too hands off with their studios for years, but holy fuck, 14 layers of management?! It sounds like a setup for a game developer version of Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.
As harsh as this all is, it's clear that there really isn't a choice here because it sounds like a total shit show. Admitting that XBOX loses 64 cents for every dollar invested is incredibly damning and I bet the excessive amount of management is a big cause of it. How much of any budgets have been getting pumped just into management roles or getting pissed away by things taking too long due to so many layers of management? At least there's hope the layoffs are mostly going to be those in the management roles that need to be cut, rather than being focused on laying off developers.

XBOX Wire - Resetting XBOX

Oh crap, I know I read 3.2k in your post, but forgot the point in mine, but my point still stands even, that's a lot of job losses.
