THE LEGEND OF ZELDA
OCARINA OF TIME
N64 | 3DS REMAKE | SWITCH 2 REMAKE
This thread is to discuss any versions of Ocarina of Time, rather than limiting it to the Switch 2 remake that was announced in today's Nintendo Direct.
So since my post in the Direct thread I've watched the trailer for this now, and I was expecting to see a lot more for a game that's coming out this year. The visual design looks nice for what limited amount of stuff we get to see, but also I'm wary on whether the game itself will have that level of quality not because of how Switch 2 will handle it but because I remember the Zelda demo reel for the Wii U that had really good visuals but weren't used for any of the games.
Also the trailer says Link doesn't have a fairy, but I don't remember Navi being something you find in the game?

Link originally doesn't have a Fairy in OoT, but the opening scene of OoT is the Deku Tree telling Navi that his time is coming to an end, and having a vision of the boy without a Fairy (Link) being a hero who saves Hyrule. So the Deku Tree sends Navi to get Link and bring him back to him, so that he can prove himself by defeating the evil inside of the Deku Tree. But Link having been found as a baby and living in Kokiri Forest and not having a Fairy for his entire childhood up to that point is what the "boy without a Fairy" is about.
I got pretty hyped by the trailer despite it not showing much. Just that opening, being able to tell immediately that it was LoZ, and then hearing bits of Saria's Song playing through out the trailer just gave me chills. I really want to see combat so I can be sure that the game is going to be more faithful to the original OoT and not have the combat dumbed down to extreme levels. Once I can see the combat and know that it's going to be what I want, it'll probably make me get a Switch 2.

Ah, that happens before you start playing as Link? That's probably why I was confused because of not recalling any gameplay where Link doesn't have Navi with him.
To add onto your combat point, I'm also hoping that puzzles aren't adjusted to be easier (unless it's optional) only because the one thing I always associate with OoT is that apparently the water temple is a bastard of a dungeon to do, but I didn't have trouble with it so I was puzzled back at that time what people were talking about. Since then though my guess is because I grew up playing Tomb Raider it prepared me for the water temple.

The thing about the Water Temple is that it's possible to use the keys in the wrong order and completely mess yourself up. Not soft-lock yourself or anything, but you can definitely make it much more confusing and end up spending a lot of extra time trying to backtrack and figure out where the hell you missed that key at. There was an old rumor way back in the day that you could use keys in the wrong order and soft-lock your game, but of course that ended up not being true.
That's where a lot of the player frustration with OoT's Water Temple comes from.

It still amazes me what they were able to do in the original with Mario 64's engine, and how vastly different the two games play. Because yeah, if you didn't know, Ocarina of Time (and therefore Majora's Mask) is running on a heavily modified version of Mario 64. It's wild to think about!
I personally can't wait to see the hype train evolve on this one. OoT literally has the highest Metacritic score of any game ever tracked on that website, so I'm honestly surprised they even took the task considering the heights they have to live up to. I also can't wait to see how they fuck up the story, because it seems like just playing the original story is too passe, if FF7R is anything to go by.
I'm not expecting Majora's Mask to be remade, but I would expect that if they do that, they'd make it DLC rather than a full-priced title. Majora's Mask uses a lot of the same assets as OoT, so it seems to me it would be more efficient to just modify the base game than to redevelop the entire thing, even if you use the same engine.
Ah, the Water Temple. It wouldn't be half as annoying if there was a quick way to change the water level. But you have to constantly loop the dungeon if you want to make any progress; it sucks. You know, its funny, because if you play the Master Quest version of OoT, you end up skipping, like, half of the Water Temple. That game is meant to be a harder version of all the dungeons, and they made the Water Temple significantly easier; it's hilarious.
