Silksong: Day One Game Pass Launch


Time to put down the COPIUM, Silksong IS, in fact, NOT vaporware! Here's a new gameplay trailer featuring everyone's beloved insect, Hornet, and her vast array of combat options/tools. 
The game was shown as part of Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022, and as such, all games shown will be out within the next 12 months. It is correct to assume this is the case for this game as well; even confirmed by Xbox when prompted on Twitter.

Definitely the biggest surprise of the Xbox conference for me. I'd heard a rumour that Silksong was going to be announced as a Day One Game Pass title, but I had written that off as not happening or if it did, it would just show up in some overview screen of other games coming to Game Pass and we wouldn't actually see the game at all.

It's nice to know it's due out in the next 12 months too, since that means we can actually expect to see more of it without waiting forever. XD

Hollow Knight: Silksong Release Pushed Back
A tweet from Matthew Griffin has revealed that Hollow Knight: Silksong will no longer be releasing in the first half of 2023 as originally planned:

While no release date had been given before, its appearance at last year's Xbox Games Showcase had pitched the game as releasing by June 13, 2023 due to that showcase only showing games that would release within a year of it airing.

No, it's not vaporware after all. Yes, this is real life. Here's the release trailer, and also the Bloomberg article (written by gaming's own Jason Schrier) discussing what lead to the long periods of radio silence coming from Team Cherry.

I enjoy that even on their official website they avoid mentioning a year. I know it isn't but I like to think it's to give themselves an out if the game somehow doesn't release in a week from now.

I've yet to read the full Bloomberg article but I know the tl;dr is they just didn't feel like rushing themselves and kept going radio silent because all they had to share was "We're working on it". I'd argue that it would have been better to just show maybe a screenshot of an area, an enemy type, just something small like what Slay The Spire 2 is doing rather than saying absolutely nothing, but somehow for Team Cherry it probably worked out better for them to have been silent because the memes it generated has marketed this game far more and better than most developers and publishers could dream of getting for zero marketing expenditure.

If the game turns out good, which I hope it does, then I'll pick it up at some point since I did enjoy Hollow Knight. There was a time I'd have jumped onto the game at launch but all the silence and delays just made me stop caring about when I end up playing it.

I'm going to say something blasphemous here... I started up Hollow Knight earlier this year... and I did not find it very enjoyable... I know, I know. How dare I say such things about Hollow Knight.

Honestly I just think this is one of those games where I didn't enjoy it the first time around, but when I get back to it and pick it up again, I might find it more enjoyable. It didn't help that I played this after playing a lot of more modern Metroidvania games and that probably made HK feel kind of bad at first.

I might enjoy it more if I experienced it with other people too, and I've been really considering starting to try and make a career of streaming, so maybe Hollow Knight would make for the perfect first game for me to start my stream dream off on.

I think Hollow Knight is good, but the amount of hype surrounding it probably makes people going into it have much higher expectations than they should. I'm sure there's examples of other games that suffered from a similar thing but I can't think of any right now.

Also, Silksong released 50 minutes ago and if nothing else it proves why pre-orders are useful. Having the entire world try to buy and download a game at the same time that's also the #1 wishlisted game on Steam has caused every store front to shit the bed. A streamer I'm watching couldn't get their cart on Steam to load for 45 minutes. Apparently other platforms weren't much better either going by comments online.

Hollow Knight: Silksong - Sea of Sorrows Expansion
The biggest news shared was the announcement that the first major expansion of Hollow Knight: Silksong is underway, featuring new areas, bosses, tools, and more! Hornet’s adventures continue in this nautically themed expansion, coming free for all players next year. Additional info will be shared shortly before Hollow Knight: Silksong - Sea of Sorrow releases.



Hollow Knight Refreshed
Alongside Silksong’s continued development, Team Cherry haven’t forgotten about its sibling, and also announced that they're hard at work on an updated version of Hollow Knight for the Nintendo Switch 2!

Hollow Knight - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition incorporates all the updates and enhancements that Silksong received on the platform: High frame-rate modes, higher resolutions, and many additional graphical effects. As with Silksong, players who own a copy of Hollow Knight on Nintendo Switch will be able to download the new Nintendo Switch 2 Edition for free when it launches in 2026!

In preparation for that release, Team Cherry will be updating all versions of the original game for current platforms, adding features and fixing bugs. PC players can experience many of those updates right now, via the public-beta branches on Steam and GOG. That includes full 16:10 and 21:9 aspect ratio support for those of you with Steam Decks or ultrawide monitors! Okay, so I saw a post on the Silksong subreddit about an expansion the other day but I just assumed it was another "Silkpost" and didn't bother to actually look at it. Then I saw it pop up on another subreddit but with a link to the Team Cherry blog post and realized it's actually real?!

I haven't played Silksong yet (and I want to replay Hollow Knight first and get the true ending anyway) but I was not expecting the game to get an expansion so soon! It's also cool that they're updating Hollow Knight too, especially since I want to replay the game. Now I'm just trying to decide whether I should wait until all the updates for it are done or not?
