What's your favourite forum software if you could afford hosting?

How hard is it to learn php? Not necessarily to write anything from scratch but even just to understand what any of it means? I tried looking at it one time and just immediately bounced off from how overwhelming it looked. XD

It's the first forum software I learned how to code for back when I was learning forum coding. For me it seemed simple enough. I think it's all in how you look at it. To me the code between php and mybb is just php is older and easier. Whereas mybb is newer and probably easier to code for younger folk. (My take.)

Well mybb doesn't use any exclusive code languages, it's still like any other website using html, css, js, php, etc. It's probably more that php being around longer means that at first it was simpler (much like html and css used to be simpler) and so getting into it early meant less to learn and being able to quickly adapt to new features of that coding language. I'd compare it to maybe playing a MMO; if you got in early there was a lot less content to get to grips with compared to where it is in 3-5 years time when it's had multiple updates and a ton of new content and features added, where a new player has to now catch up while existing players are just having to deal with only the new stuff because they already mastered the old stuff.

I'm surprised php was the first language you learned though; I'd have expected it to be CSS because that's usually the one thing all forum software allows customization of and generally the first thing people touch when trying to change their forum appearance to something other than the default.

I learned CSS sometime later. It's just a weird coincidence. XD I was trusted to take over a php forum a long time ago, so I learned what I could when I was made admin. Everything else came later as I was learning.

I actually know how to admin for mybb since I did try it with a free trial but couldn't figure out how to update mybb to the newest version. So that would be something I would need to learn by actually acquiring a website url and host that might help with that aspect. It's something I've been thinking about, but just not right now. I'm dealing with my mother who's still recovering from having pneumonia.

I have considered xenfro but the price for it is redonkulous from how I understand it. <_<

Updating MyBB is relatively simple once you know what the steps are. You just download the update, and then to install it you just copy those files onto your server that hosts the MyBB install and it replaces the necessary files. Then you just have to visit your forum to get the prompt to run the update process and that's pretty much it. If you don't have access to the server files though (which a free trial might not do) then you can't play with any of that to try it out.

The only thing you should never do is update the software by more than one update at a time. By this I mean if you're running v1.1, do not jump to 1.3. Upgrade to 1.2 first, then 1.3, otherwise it will cause things to break and it can be a pain to try and fix them. I did it to this place one time and I got lucky my host had a rollback feature I could use to revert the server to save myself the hassle of fixing my mess.

And yeah, XenForo is ridiculously expensive, especially because it isn't a one and done payment. If you don't pay for the license every year, you lose access to support and updates. Unless you can run a forum with a way to generate revenue from it to cover the costs it isn't remotely worth it.

I appreciate you telling me how to upgrade. I just need to actually do it once. haha Also, about Xenfro? I don't see paying for all that, I know some people do which is fine but I feel like you have to be well off to afford it haha. Still that's just me.

Idk. My dad thought she had the flu when she was up late throwing up. We only find out when we called an ambulance to get her since she wasn't responding to us that she was dealing with pneumonia. She's doing a lot better now.

Thank you shadow! I was sick with flu on my birthday so all I did was rest and watch some stuff on youtube.

Yes, much better. Yes, my husband and I celebrated our birthdays by going to Outback Steakhouse. I got their gold coast coconut shrimp meal deal with soup and some cheese cake, all for about $14. It was delicious.

Dealing with endometrial cancer. and its trying to attack me and live. So we're trying some immunotherapy that should hopefully kill it. I've also been dealing with low appetite and its been rough on me. D: I've been playing Fantasy Life I: The Girl Who Steals Time and trying to master my other lives. So far I've been able to master most of them.
